What we do

Growing our community

To sustain and scale street dance events, the community needs to grow and connect a skilled cohort of organisers, hosts, and creatives — empowering those already eager to learn and contribute.

How it all began

Projekt Team was founded in 2014 by Josh Mitikulena in Karori, Wellington. The idea began with Josh and was first shared with a small group of dancers in a hotel room during a dance competition. That group would later become known as the Projekt 5, the original members of the team: Benjamin Abela, Thomasi Read, Markie Mark, and Sheldon Rua.

At the time, the street dance community was made up of strong crews and companies that required dancers to commit exclusively to one group. It was uncommon to move between spaces or learn from different choreographers. In response, Josh envisioned something different, a space that removed pressure and allowed dancers the freedom to belong without overcommitting.

That vision became Projekt Team, one of the first collectives in Aotearoa to operate on a project-based model. Dancers could be part of projects as they were available, creating a flexible and inclusive environment where participation was encouraged, not enforced. This approach allowed the collective to adapt, grow, and remain accessible, which is a key reason for its longevity.

How it’s going

Projekt Team became a home for dancers grounded in freestyle, battle, and foundational street styles. At its core is the belief: People First. Dance Second. Relationships, respect, and the value each individual brings are prioritised above all else. By strengthening the people, the dance naturally follows, with greater depth and authenticity.
